LADERA RANCH, CA — The nation’s No. 1 high school player, Kaleena Smith, headlined a loaded field at the Scholastic Series Girls National Preview, held September 26-27 in Ladera Ranch. The Ontario Christian standout backed up her national reputation with another productive weekend, averaging 20.0 points, 4.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game while connecting on 3.8 threes per contest. Smith’s combination of deep shooting range, advanced creation and ability to generate offense for herself and teammates continues to distinguish her as one of the premier guard prospects in the country.
Smith was far from the only high-level performer in a deep Varsity Open field. Kamilla Basyrova delivered one of the event’s biggest scoring performances at 29.0 points per game, Bayanai Cordova averaged 23.3 points, and Chloe Jenkins produced an impressive all-around line of 18.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game.
The Gold Division featured another standout scorer in Brielle Medrano, who averaged 28.0 points while connecting on 5.0 threes per game. Nayeli Herrera and Monika Diaz each averaged 24.3 points, adding to the depth of talent on display throughout the weekend.
