Ashton Pelote Leads Marin Wildcats to 14U Championship at Grassroots 365: The Crown in Oakland

Grassroots 365: The Crown brought another competitive weekend of youth basketball to OGP Oakland on August 8-9, 2026, with champions crowned across divisions ranging from 10U through 17U.

The weekend’s marquee finish came in the 14U/8th Grade championship, where tournament MVP Ashton Pelote helped the Marin Wildcats erase an 11-point deficit and defeat BMG Prospects. BMG programs also enjoyed a strong weekend with four championships, while Payton’s Place Elite 2028 closed the event by securing the 17U title.

14U/8th Grade Championship

Marin Wildcats Rally to Capture The Crown

The Marin Wildcats erased an 11-point first-half deficit to defeat BMG Prospects, 56-52, and capture the 14U/8th Grade championship.

Ashton Pelote was named tournament MVP after averaging 17.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.8 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game. He delivered 11 points, two rebounds, one steal, and two blocks in the championship, making an impact on both ends as Marin completed its comeback.

All-Tournament selections Blake Burns and Ross Yuster were also instrumental in the victory. Burns recorded an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double with one steal and one block. Yuster finished with 11 points, five assists, and three 3-pointers after averaging 3.6 assists and 2.4 steals during the event.

Tahir Malik added 11 points, three rebounds, and one block, giving Marin four players with exactly 11 points in the championship. That balanced production helped the Wildcats withstand a strong effort from BMG.

All-Tournament selection Armani Beavers led BMG with a game-high 22 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three 3-pointers. Sushen Penumudy contributed 14 points and three 3-pointers, while Kyler Malinowski added 12 points, seven rebounds, and one block.

Janik Finks of YBA Elite Rize/Team Rize completed the All-Tournament selections after averaging 11.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game.

BMG made seven 3-pointers and remained within striking distance through the final minutes, but Marin’s balanced scoring and improved second-half defense powered the Wildcats to The Crown.

13U/7th Grade Gold Championship

BMG National Uses Second-Half Surge to Win the Gold Crown

BMG National used a decisive second-half surge to defeat Team Underrated D1 NUB, 40-28, and capture the 13U/7th Grade Gold championship.

The game remained competitive during the opening half before BMG created separation with a 12-0 run early in the second half. Its defense helped drive that momentum, finishing with six steals and five blocks while holding Team Underrated to 28 points.

Amarion Stone was named tournament MVP after averaging 11.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. Stone delivered an impactful all-around performance in the championship, recording 11 points, four rebounds, two assists, three steals, and one block.

Ojas Pathak matched Stone with 11 points and added three assists. Mateo Jones-Perez contributed seven points, five rebounds, two blocks, and one steal, while Luke Macuga and Mason Veinstein each added four points. The balanced production gave BMG five players with at least four points.

Team Underrated was led by Logan Davis, who finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, one steal, and one block. Rovi Quiambao added seven points, while Noah Lalimarmo scored six points and made two 3-pointers.

The Gold All-Tournament Team also recognized several of the division’s leading performers: Cruz Drake of Javstep Basketball, Kelly Hayes of Payton’s Place Elite 2028, Lucas Madamba of All Players Together, and Sean Sarkari of D1 NUB.

BMG’s scoring balance, defensive activity, and ability to seize control after halftime proved to be the difference in the Gold championship.

Payton’s Place Elite 2028 Captures The Crown

Payton’s Place Elite 2028 defeated the NT2C Stallions, 71-57, to capture the 17U championship.

Kalani Abreu was named tournament MVP after averaging an event-leading 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.0 block, and 0.5 steals per game.

Payton’s Place earned three of the five tournament honors. Arthur Barker III averaged 15.0 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.0 steal, while Toby Merchant contributed 15.0 points, four rebounds, two assists, and 0.6 blocks per game.

Henry Bennett represented Team Hello on the All-Tournament Team after averaging 16.0 points, three rebounds, and 2.3 made 3-pointers. NT2C Stallions standout Imari Count completed the selections with averages of 12.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game.
